Summary: "The outpouring of grief that followed news of Sandy Pollack's death in a plane crash outside of Havana in January 1985 was truly staggering. Nearly 400 messages of tribute, personal recollections and expressions of solidarity were received from leaders of nations and national liberation movements, elected officials in our own country, the range of organizations that make up our peace of justice movements, and of course Sandy's co-workers, neighbors and many friends. Dozens of poems from sent from California and Texas, Havana and New York. From literally every continent, friends and colleagues and those who only knew of Sandy wrote to express their sadness. Who was Dany Pollack that she should receive such an extraordinary tribute? Slight of build, modest in demeanor, unknown to the media as a "movement celebrity," this beautiful young woman from Queens, New York knew no task that was too large or small for her in the movements for peace, justice and liberation. For the last 10 years of all-too-brief life she was a molder and central figure in the constellation of organizations that make up the US peace movement. As a major architect of US public opposition to US interventionism in Latin America and the Caribbean, she became one of the most trusted confidants in our country of the revolutionary movements and governments in that region. The volume of appreciation includes biographical sketch of Sandy Pollack in the words of those who knew her best; a selection from the many poems written upon her death; a representation of her own writing, including some front-line dispatches from Central America; a memoir of her last days in Havana before the tragedy; and a sampling of the several hundred messages of tribute from the US and around the world."
