Summary: This resource contains poetry and prose that has often been difficult to access for the general public, [as of time of publication]. "It is also, I believe, a contribution to the present intellectual and emotional life both of American Jews and of non-Jews here and abroad." The poetry and prose included within the text shows that a Jewish consciousness was present from her ealiest days as a young writer. While the character of her work shifted over time, a dedication and thematic interpretation for and about the Jewish community was present in her work, especially in regards to social composition, the Jewish working class, Jewish culutral life, and politic affecting the aftermentioned community. In addition to the poetry, prose, and translations included, there are also bibliographical footnotes that speak to references utilized as inspiration for her work. Lazarus's work also considered political foundations in regards to Socialism and progressive politics in term of the roles that Jews and non-Jews had in their establishment. -- from the introduction
