Leonard I. Weinglass / The trial of the Cuban Five --
"In September 1998, five Cubans living in Miami were arrested and charged with conspiracy to commit espionage and conspiracy to commit murder. The "crime" of these Cubans was to monitor terrorist groups in Florida that have acted - and continue to act - with impunity from U.S. territory against an independent and sovereign country, the nearb island of Cuba. Ironically, in the wake of the events of September 11, on December 2001 they were sentenced to applallingly long terms of imprisonment. The five Cubans, Antonio Guerrero Rodriguez, René González Sehwerert, Fernando González Llort, Ramon Labañino Slazar and Gerardo Hernández Nordelo, have been labelled as spies, but their trails alone indicate the political nature of their imprisonment. This book contains correspondence spanning five years between these Cuban prisoners and their families, allowing the reader a glimpse of how ordinary families cope in extraordinary circumstances...." - from editorial note, page xi.
The book is divided into sections, each with a description from one of the wives (in René González’s case, from his mother) of police, court and prison encounters, followed by family correspondence. It first appeared in 2004 in Cuba as “El Dulce Abismo” (The Sweet Abyss), the title of a Silvio Rodriguez song." -- from book review in the People's World.
The Cuban Five were released as part of the Obama administration's efforts to normalize relations between the US and Cuba. The last were released on December 17, 2014.
