This is the second volume of Deutscher's "The Prophet" trilogy. The first volume of the trilogy is "The Prophet Armed: Trotsky, 1879-1921" and was published in 1954. The third volume of the trilogy is "The Prophet Outcast: Trotsky, 1929-1940" and was published in 1963. Contains a list of 12 plates (page xv). Plates include various illustrations of Trotsky with family, Trotsky at Lenin's funeral and inspecting troops as the Commissar of War. "In this volume Mr. Deutscher continues his brilliant and objective study of the controversial Trotsky, which he began in the "The Prophet Armed". It is a self-contained book covering the years of the great struggle between Stalin and Trotsky, from the end of the civil war (1921) up to Trotsky's banishment from Russia (1929). In 1922, Stalin was chosen general secretary of the party, and in 1924, on Lenin's death, with Kamenev and Zinoviev, succeeded to the supreme power. Trotsky's uncompromising opposition to Stalin's policies led to his loss of power in 1925 and his expulsion from the party and exile to Alma-Ata in Siberia. This volume ends with 1929, when he vanished from Russia. A third volume will cover the years of his exile and assassination.
