Summary: "In this volume Mr. Deutscher continues his brilliant and objective study of the controversial Trotsky, which he began in the "The Prophet Armed". It is a self-contained book covering the years of the great struggle between Stalin and Trotsky, from the end of the civil war (1921) up to Trotsky's banishment from Russia (1929). In 1922, Stalin was chosen general secretary of the party, and in 1924, on Lenin's death, with Kamenev and Zinoviev, succeeded to the supreme power. Trotsky's uncompromising opposition to Stalin's policies led to his loss of power in 1925 and his expulsion from the party and exile to Alma-Ata in Siberia. This volume ends with 1929, when he vanished from Russia. A third volume will cover the years of his exile and assassination. Mr. Deutscher tells the story, for the first time, on the basis of Trotsky's archives and many other sources; and his book contains many facts and scenes hitherto unknown to historians and to the general public. From the narrative emerge extensive new character studies of nearly all the Soviet leaders; a special study of Trotsky the man of ideas, the Marxist philosopher and literary critic; and a new account of the causes of Trotsky's defeat. all related to some extent to the present state of the Soviet Union and Communism. The story told in "The Prophet Unarmed" has acquired a new and topical interest in the light of Soviet developments in the post-Stalin era." --from the dust jacketContinues: Deutscher, Isaac.
