Summary: "A seminal and controversial figure in the development of Marxism, at once one of modern Communism's founders and one of its severest critics, takes form in Professor Nettl's authoritative biography of Rosa Luxemburg - the first to appear in the West for twenty-five years. Conceived on a large scale, it deals with her political activity in the full context of the German, Polish, and Russian Socialist movements, vividly portraying many of her important contemporaries. Particular attention is paid to her relationship to Kautsky in Germany and Lenin in Russia. To Rosa Luxemburg's work and life both Communists and non-Communists still turn for inspiration, and her views have become on increasing import to the new revolutionary criticism of capitalist society. The author has used both sociology and political theory as a means of revealing their significance. He examines the revisionist controversy in detail, as well as her comments on the revolutions of 1905 and 1917 and her quarrel with the German party leadership. Much hithero unpublished material in East Germany and Polance, including many of Rosa Luxemburg's letters, was made available to the author, who does full justice to his subject's intense and rewarding personal life as well. The essential narrative has been retained in this abridgement of the two-volume edition, and a new preface evaluates her thought in relation to the events and problems of today." -- back cover
