Summary: "Ishi, Last of His Tribe is a story from history. Ishi was an American Indian born in 1861 or 1862. His tribe was the Yana, and his parents belonged to the southernmost of the Yana who called themselves the Yahi. [...] Ishi lived long enough to leave a record of what the Yana were like. White men now know how Ishi's people lived; who were some of their Gods and Heroes; what was their language, in ordinary speech and in story and song; and something of Yahi courage and conduct and manners and the Yahi Way of Life. This tries to look back on Ishi's life, and the old Yahi World, and the world of the white man as seen through Ishi's eyes." -- from the author's note (page 207).
