Summary: "In April 1969 Manuel Cortes, the last republican mayor of a small Spanish village before it fell to the Franco forces during the civil war, emerged after thirty years' hiding from the regime. Helped by his wife, Juliana, and daughter, Maria, he had hidden in the village since the end of the war. A few days before his release, the regime, celebrating the thirtieth anniversary of its victory in the war, had declared an amnesty for offences committed or alleged to have been committed during the war. For the first time in a generation, Manuel Cortes, barber by profession and lifelong socialist, felt free to come out of hiding. The following pages are his and his wife's and their daughter's account of those years. They speak for themselves, evoking the trials and hardships they have been through, the narrow escapes, the moments when everything seemed lost." -- from the introduction.
