Ralph W. McGehee spent 25 years in the CIA, from 1952 to 1977. He entered a super-patriot at the height of the Cold War; he left disillusioned and shattered by what he had seen and learned, especially in Vietnam, as he watched a tragic and senseless war grow and expand. He learned, after long years of doubt and soul-searching, that the CIA was not an intelligence gathering agency presenting the facts to the policy makers. Rather it was nothing more than a covert action arm of the presidency, shaping and distorting the 'facts' to comport with official policy. Indeed this most timely book argues that the U.S. is running the same risks today in Central America and the Middle East." -- from the back cover.
