520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. "'Frame by Frame-A Black Filmography' is a compendium of over 3,000 film items. Films listed are those with Black themes or subject matter - even before Blacks acted in them; films that have substantial particpation by Blacks as writers, actors, producers, directors, musicians, animators or consultants; and films in which Blacks appeared in ancillary or walk-on roles. 'Black' here encompasses the following: Afro- American/ Black American (U.S.), Third world Black Latin American (Mexico, Central America, South America), Black African (mainly sub-Saharan), Afro-Caribbean. Although the filmography as well as the film course(s) began as Afro-American, it became increasingly clear that Black experience in film as well as in history went far beyond the boundaries of the Unites States or the North American continent. . . Hence a larger, world view is reflected in such entries. The time period covered is 1900-1977. The following information was sought, although with equal success for each entry: Film title/series title, Narrator/cast, Writer: screenplay/adaptation, Producer, Director, Studio/company et. al. Because general information about many of the films can easily be found elsewhere, the emphasis of 'Frame by Frame' is on the presence and participation of Blacks; each is identified and full cast lists have been assembled wherever possible. Likewise, the annotations address the black theme in the film, even if it is minor one, and identify the roles played by Black actors, if that information was available. Every effort has been made not to editorialize or to be judgmental, not to express repugnance at obvious racist attitudes and tones, themes and stereotypes, but to describe as objectively as possible the content of the film. A monumental effort was made to eschew aesthetic judgments and personal biases as well." -- from chapter "How to Use This Volume"
