"The present book does not set out to develop specifically regionally orientated theory; rather the intention is to provide a broad study of South East Asia from a world-economy perspective. Thus the present study begins with a review of South East Asia's role in the world-economy, outlines the developments that give rise to the present pattern and isolates the key elements of contemporary change. Given this focus the account of South East Asia since the 1940s is concerned almost entirely with the ASEAN group. An analysis of the complex and distinctive experiences of Burma, Laos, Kampuchea and Vietnam are beyond the scope of the present volume. Similarly for the ASEAN group no attempt is made at a comprehensive review of their post-war development. Given that the main concern is the interaction with the world-economy, emphasis is placed on those states, sectors and strategies which illustrated the process most clearly" -- From 1.1 Introdcution
