Summary: "With the Indian economy wedded to planned development, Prof. Bettelheim's theoretical ideas presented in this work on the problems of planned economic growth, and his views on investment allocations and technological choices assume special significance. Part One of the book presents elaborate analyses of such problems as value and price, simple and extended production, criteria for the choice of technique, etc. Part Two deals with a set of conceptual tools giving the possibility of a closer analysis of economic growth under the conditions of economic planning. With the hep of these conceptual tools, five types of necessary consequences have been envisaged of any policy of economic developments, viz. productive employment, level of labour productivity, investment pattern, standards of living and investible surples. Another important point of special significance to countries having to face problems of underdevelopment and of low living standards refers to the distinction between the short-term and long-term consequences of any decision taken in the field of investments allocation and technological choice." - From the back cover.
