Summary: "R.H. Tawney is widely regarded as the patron saint of twentieth-century British socialism. Partly, this is because of the evident influence of his work on several generations of socialists in Britain, but also because his work may be seen to reflect some of the characteristic themes of British socialism as a whole. His writings (such as The Acquisitive Society and Equality) have become socialist classics and profoundly influenced the left. But the Tawney tradition has exercised a wider influence over social thought and policy. Now, in the 1980s, when that tradition has come under attack from both left and right, Tawney has once again been turned to (and fought over) by those seeking to restate the theoretical basis of what they variously refer to as social democracy or democratic socialism. There could scarcely be a more timely moment for a fresh examination of Tawney's ideas. Here Tawney's work, in its several aspects, is both described and interpreted. His intellectual development is traced and the main themes of his work are identified and discussed. There is a concluding assessment of the relevance of Tawney's ideas to the world of today. It is an essay in interpretation, at once scholarly and accessible. It will enable the general reader to discover why Tawney remains a figure of political interest and controversy. It will enable the student ( especially of politics, history and social policy) to have access, for the first time, to a lively and authoritative introduction to the ideas of this influential thinker." -- From the back cover.
