This is a reprint of a reissue (1947) of the first edition that was published in 1942. In a note (dated November, 1946) to the Foreword, the author writes, "I have made a small number of alterations in the text of the first edition of this book. The only one of substance is in the appendix to Chapter III where there was an error in my original argument."
