"This re-issue of C.K. Hobson's Export of Capital (1914) is much to be welcomed. Its combination of very fine analysis of the many theoretical issues relating to foreign investment, extensive historical learning and pioneering ventures in statistical calculation entitle it to be regarded as a classic. It was written in the heyday of British investment overseas, and the topic was thus a very live one at the time. In the decade before the First World War the British of capital rose to a great height, which almost certainly constituted a record in world history, if considered as a fraction of the lending county's nation income ; in absolute amount it was of the same order as American private investment overseas until very recently, an astonishing fact considering how much greater present American private national income is than was British national income half a century ago." -- from the preface
