Two world outlooks -- Materialism: mechanical and dialectical -- The general nature of dialectics --Dialectics of society -- Dialectics and logic -- Dialectics and sophistry -- The philosophical struggle to-day -- Problems of socialist culture.
In A Textbook of Dialectical Materialism, David Guest write about the history of socialist theory. He goes on to argue the importance of theory in combination with direct action to successful socialist movements. Guest contrasts this synthesis approach to the socialist worldview with what he views as an overemphasis on direct action that hinders the socialist movements in the United Kingdom, the United States, and Europe. A forward by H. Levy helps to contextualize the work in the time period it was published, the late 1930s. With light editing by T. A. Jackson, this work provides a brief overview of socialist theory, and an argument for its inclusion in socialist discourse.
