Summary: "A collection of readings by and about Robeson (1898-1976), the African-American singer and actor who was blacklisted in the US for much of his career because of his outspoken politics. Excerpts from his writing are accompanied by essays giving scholarly accounts of his work, commentary on his politics, and tributes in poetry and prose, presented by some of the best known writers and performers of the 20th century." -- onlineSummary: "No man has more completeley embodied the dynamics of the twentieth century than Paul Robeson, both in his enormous gifts and in his travails born of his race and philosophy. A scholarship student at Rutgers, a junior Phi Beta Kappa, valedictorian, and holder of 13 varsity letters in four sports, he was chosen for Walter Camp's great All-American football team in 1917. A leading concert singer, he proudly introduced worldwide audiences to the rich heritage of the Negro folksong and he was a memorable Othello in Shakespeare's play. Yet these accomplishments came to be overwhelmed during one of the most brutally racist eras of American history which found Robeson an early stalwart spokesmen against the oppression of prjudice at home and colonialism abroad. Undestanding that there was no real "democracy" while his country was crushing freedom overseas in the name of anticommunism, he led his people to a new political maturity. suffering exile to do so. Drummed out of the country to live abroad, he found his name and contributions eradicated from the annals of our history where he paved the way for freedom fighters to follow." -- book jacket
